Most famous as the Heart and Voice of The Harlem Gospel Singers, Queen Esther Marrow has reinvented herself with a bold change of musical direction: She’s poured her heart and soul into a successful collaboration with German hit songwriter and soul superstar Xavier Naidoo and producer Michael Herberger.
Over the last couple of months, Queen Esther commuted between Newport News, Virginia and her home away from home Mannheim, Germany, a town synonymous for great music and fun loving people.
The result is a soulful album with a modern, contemporary edge, a beautiful collection of stunning ballads, funky up-tempo tracks, all of the music a true reflection of Queen Esther’s sophistication and artistic depth.
Queen Esther Marrow’s latest album LEGEND talks of love and suffering, life and passing, happiness and sorrow. Most and foremost of new beginnings, of hope and a bright future.
Queen Esther was discovered by the late Duke Ellington when she was 22 years old. While touring internationally and recording, Queen formed a close personal bond with the great man who gave her the first professional experience of her career.
From now on, Queen Esther pursued her own career as an artist where she consistently proved and widened her incredibly varied musical repertoire as a soloist as well as in cooperation with important artists like Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Joe Zawinul, Lena Horne, Mahalia Jackson, BB King, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and many others.
One of the high points of Queen Esther’s life was her work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whom she actively supported and accompanied on his World Crusade for the American civil rights movement fighting against racial discrimination. “Spending time and actually getting to know Dr. King”, recalls Queen, “means more to me than I can ever express.”
Moreover, Queen Esther was engaged for many television and film roles. She appeared on three PBS Specials and as the Hero’s mother in Motown’s “The Last Dragon”. She is especially proud of her appearance on “Sesame Street” as Grouch's mother.
In the course of her career, Queen Esther has recorded numerous albums. Early collector's recordings on Flying Dutchman and Fantasy Records include “Sister Woman” and “Esther Marrow… Newport News, Virginia”. Her album “God Cares” has been released in the United States on EMI Gospel and is distributed in Europe by EMI Classics.
